A furious Kit Symons insisted Fulham were robbed of all three points by a ‘blatantly offside’ Charlton goal.
The Fulham boss felt Freddie Bulot lurking in the centre put off keeper Marcus Bettinelli from picking up the ball, only to see it run through to Johan Berg Gudmundsson – a former Fulham academy player – who prodded the Charlton leveller high into the net. Ross McCormack had given Fulham the lead with a looping header but the Whites had to settle for just a point after the offside flag was never raised.
Symons said: “Their goal was blatantly offside. The bloke in the middle was inches from touching it, and it stopped our keeper from picking it up. But the ref’s made a mistake. It was an honest mistake, but a mistake nonetheless.
“There was a lot of endeavour out there. Matt Smith was out on his feet at the end when he put it over the bar in the final seconds. Normally, he’s good with his right foot. But any point at this time of the season is welcome, but we’re not out of danger yet, and there’s work still to be done.”
Symons made light of five changes in the side after the Bank Holiday battering at the hands of Brentford – insisting that his selection was only designed to deliver three points.
“I pick a side to win,” he added. “I tried that on Friday as well, but it didn’t work out.”
