Clint Dempsey has described the USA’s shock win over Spain in the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup as ‘huge’ for the game in America.

The Fulham midfielder made Jozy Altidore’s opener and scored the crucial second goal in Bloemfontein which put the game beyond the European champions, whose unbeaten stood at 35 before a contest that very few people gave Bob Bradley’s side a chance in. You can watch Clint’s goal again below.

Dempsey, outstanding for the Whites this season, hopes the victory could give football a lift in his homeland where it remains a minority adult sport.

This win is huge for American soccer. It’s sweeter because were down and out going into the game against Egypt. No one picked us. But we fought hard, stayed compact defensively, got the goals when we went forward.

The US will face Brazil in the final on Sunday after a late Dani Alves goal took Dunga’s side past the hosts South Africa in a closer than expected second semi-final tonight.
