Fulham captain Tom Cairney described his side’s first win of the season at Ipswich Town yesterday as ‘massive’ and believes that the impressive victory could help to ignite their season.
Fulham’s talismanic midfielder returned to the side for the tussle with high-flying Ipswich, who had won their first four league fixtures, and Slavisa Jokanovic’s put a testing August firmly behind them with a comfortable victory at Portman Road. Cairney knew the value of the win – as he told Get West London’s Ryan O’Donovan afterwards:
I think it was massive – we’ve had an up and down pre-season and we’ve had injuries and niggles. It’s been hard to get our season going, you could say there was a little hangover from the Play-offs, but no, it was a big win and what we wanted and worked for all week and hopefully that kick starts our season – the win was so important.
Cairney revealed that he would be in touch with Scotland’s medical staff about what sort of part he will play on international duty after being called up by national manager Gordon Strachan for the World Cup qualifiers against Lithuania and Malta.
You could say after a win like that we want a game next week, but no, with the injuries we’ve had, and especially mine, I’d like to get a couple of weeks training in if I can and rest it too. I’m going to speak with Scotland, I had an injection to play in the game yesterday so I’ll speak to them and see what happens.
