Marco Silva feels the gap between the Premier League and the Championship is growing ever greater.
The Fulham head coach guided his side to promotion back to the top flight in his first campaign at Craven Cottage and successfully broke the Whites’ yo-yo cycle, where they regularly swapped places with tonight’s League Cup opponents Norwich City, by leading Fulham to a tenth place finish last term. But, in the build up to this evening’s third round clash with the Canaries, Silva warned that the struggles of this season’s newly-promoted clubs shows the task of establishing yourself in the top tier is becoming tougher.
“It’s really hard and it’s becoming harder. In my opinion, it [the gap] is getting bigger, partly because the Premier League is so competitive. Last season we saw how much clubs were fighting not be relegated, how much they spent in the January market. It was unbelievable.
Some clubs are more prepared for that. The Championship is tough, but look right now: Leicester are top. They were a Premier League club for 10 years. For some it is not so difficult [to stay up], but for others it is, and Fulham and Norwich are good examples from their years of up and down.”
