Fulham forward Kieron Bowie has received a late call-up to the Scottish under-21 squad after returning to the Northampton Town starting line-up.
The 20 year-old has headed to Spain ahead of Scotland’s under-21 fixtures against Sweden and Wales having made his first Cobblers’ appearance in nearly three months as a substitute at Hartlepool ten days ago. The former Raith Rovers forward gained more minutes as a substitute in a 1-0 win over Mansfield and started the Sixfields success over Crewe on Saturday. Bowie, who has four goals and two assists in 27 league appearances as Northampton occupy the final automatic promotion place in League Two, has the chance to add to his pair of under-21 international caps after Scotland suffered a series of withdrawals.
Northampton manager Jon Brady, who has also seen Tom King added to Welsh squad, said:
“Kieron wasn’t going to go after his injury but he’s had a bit of game-time recently and Scotland have had an injury within their squad so he’s been called up late. It is what it is and we are where we are with it. We wish them all the best and pray they both come back with a clean bill of health.
It’s a bit bittersweet with the situation we are in but you’ve also got to be pleased for the boys that they are getting international recognition. They are professional footballers and they want to represent their country and I don’t blame them.”
