João Palhina, peerless in the Fulham midfield since his switch from Sporting in the summer, has been picked for Portugal’s World Cup squad.

The 27 year-old holding midfielder has plenty of high quality competition for a place in the Portuguese starting line-up when their tournament gets underway against Ghana on Thursday 24 November, but the quality of his Premier League performances should help him add to his fifteen senior international caps.

Palhinha told Fulham’s official website tonight:

“It’s a dream, it’s a big dream in my life, for my family, my friends, everyone dreamt of this. I will do my best for sure, like I do here, to help my country to do good things. We want to do a good World Cup and give a gift to our country.”
