There’s a brilliant interview with Guy Whittingham by Peter Rutzler over at the Athletic this morning – where the former Portsmouth striker reveals that he would be happy for Aleksandar Mitrovic to beat his record of 42 goals in the second tier in a season.

Part of the reasoning is that Whittingham’s nephew, who lives in Australia, is a fanatical Fulham fan, but he also has an appreciation of the Serbian’s extraordinary achievements as well:

“I want him to break the record because it is just a fantastic achievement in this current time, with the relentlessness of a Championship season. I hope his efforts get them promoted as well, whether he breaks the record or not, because that was the disappointment for me. I know he’s been in the Premier League with them before, but to be able to go up with a team is a great achievement.”

The full interview is well worth a look – with a fascinating insight into Whittingham’s career, his sensational scoring streak and the similarities between the two forwards.
