Fulham manager Martin Jol has revealed that he tried to bring Rene Meulensteen to Craven Cottage in the summer.

The Dutchman joined Fulham as head coach sparking speculation that it was a handover phase with Jol leaving the club in the near future.

But the Whites manager has moved quickly to deny these claims.

“Everyone here knows that I wanted to bring him to this side in the summer, after his departure from Manchester United, but he made a different choice”, Jol told Voetbal International.

“Eight weeks ago I talked to him, but he disappointingly went to Qatar.

“I understood from someone that there was a chance that maybe we could get Rene to Fulham. I called him and text him and I am delighted that he has come to Fulham.”
