A frustrated Jean Tigana said he would retire from football management and take up fishing if the Fulham board fail to back him after watching the Whites draw with Burnley in the FA Cup.

The French head coach confirmed that he would be happy to leave the Cottagers if Mohamed Al-Fayed doesn’t get his chequebook this summer and deliver the spending neccessary to see Fulham compete for the European places.

Tigana, whose side relied on a Steed Malbranque leveller to earn a replay at Turf Moor, told his post-match press conference at Loftus Road:

“I met the chairman and he wants to see me again but if I don’t get the assurances I want then I will have to go fishing. I do not want to manage another club. I told my wife five years ago that I would not carry on, then two years later I took the Fulham job. The problem is not me. The problem is the target of the club. I don’t know where they will play or whether I will have to work with a young team or not.
