Fulham full back Steve Finnan insists the Whites are up for the League Cup – and will be attacking the competition as it offers a potential European prize.

Jean Tigana’s side kick-off their cup campaign with a tricky trip to face Third Division high-fliers Rochdale on Tuesday night. The Frenchman is expected to play some of his fringe players at Spotland. But Irish international Finnan says Fulham are motivated by the prospect of a Cup run – having pushed Liverpool all the way in the competition last season.

He said: “The game at Rochdale won’t be easy because they are doing well in their division and they will want to have a go at us. We started thinking about the Rochdale game the moment the final whistle went at Charlton and we know it is an important match. Everyone at Fulham wants to get into Europe and the Worthington Cup is a great way to get there.”

Midfielder John Collins also added that nobody will be taking Rochdale lightly – on the instructions of ultra-perfectionist Tigana.

“Some people say it’s a potential banana skin but it won’t be if we approach the game in the right manner – and I’m sure the manager will make sure we do that.”
