Steed Malbranque slammed Lyon for holding up his impending move to Fulham and accused the French side’s general manager Bernard Lacombe of talking ‘complete nonsense’.

The French under-21 international is in London awaiting the final paperwork from France before he can be officially confirmed as Fulham’s first summer signing. He took aim at Lyon’s characterisation of him being selfish for seeking a move to the Premier League.

“To say I’ve been selfish is complete nonsense. “Lyon have known my point of view for a long time and they are the ones who have held up the transfer. It would all have been sorted out a lot quicker if they hadn’t dragged their feet.”

Malbranque is set to sign a five-year contract at Craven Cottage having become frustrated at his lack of first-team opportunities at Lyon. The row began over the weekend when, with Lyon opening their domestic campaign with a defeat at Lens, Lacombe aimed some barbs at their departing midfielder.

Personally I’m very disappointed. We were really counting on him. He would have played much more this year. It’s a real shame to have this happen on the eve of the new season.”

Malbranque dismissed the suggestion that he would have played in the Lyon first-team this season, highlighting previous promises that had been ignored, and insisted he was eager to concentrate on helping Fulham make an impact in the top flight.

“I’ve confidence in myself. Lots of spaces open up during English matches and I reckon I can take great advantage. Although I favour a Latin style of play, I believe I can impose myself in the Premiership. There are plenty of other French players here already and they are enjoying success.”
