Wolves have had a £750,000 bid for Matt Smith rejected by Fulham, according to a report in this morning’s Sun newspaper.

Fulham are reportedly holding out for an increased offer – perhaps by just a further £50,000 – for the 27 year-old striker, who struggled for consistent game time at Craven Cottage last season. The former Leeds and Oldham forward has been a long-term target of the Midlands club, who signed Andy Lonergan from Fulham yesterday, and they had a loan move rebuffed towards the end of last term.

The 6ft 6in striker scored Fulham’s first goal of the campaign in the opening day draw at Cardiff but found the net just once more – in a disappointing defeat by Nottingham Forest in the final weeks of the season – as he struggled for form, fitness and a regular place in the side following the emergence of Moussa Dembele. Smith has scored seven goals in 36 appearances for Fulham since signing from Leeds United on deadline day in September 2014 for a fee believed to be in the region of £500,000 and enjoyed a successful loan spell with Bristol City.
