Philippe Senderos believes that his inclusion in the Fulham defence could give new boss Martin Jol another option as the club aim to compete on four fronts this season.

The Swiss international was picked at centre back alongside Brede Hangeland against Aston Villa yesterday, splitting up the successful partnership between the Norwegian and Aaron Hughes, who started the Premier League opener at right back.

The former Arsenal defender was disappointed with Fulham’s start and, while they weren’t able to push on and claim a win, Senderos felt they improved after the break.

But we did better in the second half. The first half, we were a bit sloppy in possession and lost a lot of balls.

But when we pushed on after half-time – we had chances but it wasn’t to be. Of course, we’re delighted to keep the clean sheet.

Senderos made no apologies for breaking up the Hughes-Hangeland partnership that has served Fulham so well over the past three seasons.

And as for getting into the team, it’s very important to have options in these positions – it improves everybody, and there could be a lot of games this season.
